My Journey to Mongolia A Reporter’s Journal is a compilation of short sketches of incidents, usually written shortly after they occurred. They offer a glimpse of my 16 months backpacking across the Mongolian steppe training journalists -- where I met reindeer herders, feasted on sheep ears, bonded with Eagle hunters, drank fermented mare’s milk, hiked through a blizzard and awoke to an icy hotel room to discover my toothpaste had frozen. All along the way, I met some of the warmest people in the world in one of the coldest places on Earth.

My Journey to Mongolia A Reporter Journal Charles S Rice 9781491206058 Books

Mongolia in the aftermath of the collapse of communism was a truely remote place. One of the last where people wore traditional clothes unselfconciously and pursued pastoral life, following their flocks. As such it was part of a world that we are losing. As a Journalist, Charles Rice observes life in great and small anecdotes. I had the pleasure of knowing Chuck in Mongolia during this time and I found his stories flooded me with memories of a time and place that is fast changing. Well worth this view into a place at the end of the world.

Interesting experiencfes, but the writing quality is very poor
I felt like I was beside the author in Mongolia....Love reading about other countries and this one was exceptional.....Your mind won't wonder reading this book, you are right beside the author in his travels and experiences.
Loved the book. It made me wish that I could follow in the reporter's footsteps and share the same experiences
My friend Chuck Rice has written a delightful book about his adventures in Mongolia. We were there at the same time, and he has captured the essence of the beautiful country, the kind gracious people, the fascinating culture, and the fun we ex patriates had. This book is a must read for anyone who has visited or wants to visit Mongolia. I particulaly liked the way Chuck updated the pieces with current information at the end.
An interlocked series of engaging stories and vignettes about Mr. Rice's fellowship as a journalism trainer in a country emerging from Soviet dominance. Much of what he writes is sadly familiar to anyone who has worked in countries transitioning from authoritarianism but the unique flavors of Mongolia are ones to savor.
Mongolia is a misterious country for the western traveler --not to say the western reader. Charles Rice's book presents numerous vignettes about the country from the point of view of a journalist trainer. His notes are clearly written and highly enjoyable he is always respectful and inquisitive about the Mongolian culture and shows an ambition to learn about this people. The details about the Mongolian lifestyle (the cuisine, places, society, events) are quite captivating there are anecdotes about intricate roads, strange encounters, rare animals, extreme weather, the life in Ulan Baatar...! I personally appreciated the opportunity to learn about a country with such a unique way of life.
the author writes in journal, or blog format, and moves along smoothly, from event to event. i thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the country of mongolia, and my perceived image of that part of the world was greatly challenged. kind of made me want to visit there someday - but not in the winter.
